Lakeshore East Neighborhood: Then and Now

Wednesday, May 25th, 2016

Welcome to Lakeshore East edition of Chicago Then and Now. Lakeshore East is one of the most exciting and innovative communities that Chicago has to offer! Lakeshore East is the new kid on the block that’s paving the way for the future of luxury living in downtown Chicago. Located in Chicago’s New East Side (just east of The Loop), Lakeshore East successfully blends buildings of the past like The Buckingham with groundbreaking luxury apartments of the future like Aqua.

LAKESHORE EAST THEN:

Originally, the Lakeshore East area was used for the Illinois Central Railroad yards. Pete Dye developed it into Metro Golf, a 9-hole golf course, in 1994. During this time before the 21st century the newest developments were The Buckingham, The Parkshore, Three Illinois Center, North Harbor Tower and The Shoreham.

LAKESHORE EAST NOW:

Gorgeous, contemporary, “a Walker’s Paradise” — these are just a few words that describe Lakeshore East. The community is truly in the lap of luxury. Millennium Park, Lake Michigan, the Theatre District, the Magnificent Mile — the possibilities are endless. It even has a beautiful 6-acre park that is the first and only free wireless park in downtown Chicago!

This neighborhood is one of Chicago’s lesser-known treasures. It boasts stunning views of the skyline, Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. In fact, it’s located in the northeastern part of the Loop, where the lake meets the river. It’s also near the city’s central business district as well as shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities. Navy Pier and Michigan Avenue are nearby, too.

The area is ideal for many types of residents, especially dog owners. In fact, Lakeshore East is a dog-friendly neighborhood that features an off-leash dog park on the south edge of the Lakeshore East Park. The park even contains a water feature and a double-gated enclosure. Additionally, the neighborhood is public-transit friendly: A convenient way to get around is via the Pedway, a tunnel system with access points all over the downtown area. You can also travel via the green, red and blue CTA lines.

The Lakeshore East neighborhood is at the cutting edge for real estate and architecture. Furthermore, it houses 340 on the Park, which is the Midwest’s first Silver LEED certified building. The Aqua building is the 1st skyscraper in Chicago to combine luxury rentals, a hotel and retail all into one 87-story building! You’ll also find luxury apartments at Cascade, North Harbor Tower, Coast and The Tides at Lakeshore East. However, this is just the beginning. With many new Lakeshore East buildings coming on the horizon, this community’s development is definitely one that you do not want to miss!
